Volunteer Spotlight: Jenene Wong, Au.D.

We recently sat down with Jelene Wong, AuD. and Advisory Board Member. Her dedication and passion greatly contribute to our mission. Here’s a quick look at why she’s such a valuable part of our team.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START VOLUNTEERING?
Hearing about Tori’s struggles while going through the cochlear implant process, the founder of Hear 4 Hope, initially motived me to help out with this organization. Like her, countless others have struggled with this process and desire a support system to help them along this journey.

WHY IS THE CAUSE WE SUPPORT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
As an Audiologist, I have seen my patients struggle with their hearing loss journeys and find that community is an important piece of the puzzle. I feel that I can only provide so much support as an audiologist, but a community/village is really needed and is currently missing, at least in Hawai’i.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR STORIES RELATED TO THIS CAUSE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
I had a cousin who was born deaf, and due to limited resources on the island, her family moved to the mainland for better support. This experience, along with seeing both of my grandmothers struggle with hearing loss and isolate themselves at social gatherings instead of using their hearing aids, has deeply impacted me. Looking back, these personal experiences likely influenced my decision to become an audiologist and fuel my passion for helping others navigate hearing loss.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE THROUGH YOUR VOLUNTEER WORK?
I hope to help provide support for those struggling with hearing loss to come together and share in their struggles and triumphs. I also hope to educate others of the importance of hearing loss and treatments, as well as advocate for better services.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR INVOLVEMENT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
As an audiologist, I believe that my education and training will help in the education, advocacy, and resources that Hear 4 Hope provides. I hope that patients and family members will feel comfortable enough to ask me questions that they may be wondering about.
